Dutch incumbent KPN has announced plans to trial LTE in the south of Holland from February to September next year with European vendor NSN.
The operator will test technical capabilities in The Hague and Voorburg, but expects commercial LTE services will not be available for another few years.
“We anticipate that it could well be a few years yet before all the elements are in place for LTE to really start gaining traction in the market,” a spokesman for KPN told TelecomFinance.
“With the programme we have announced today, we at KPN are making sure we are well positioned, both in terms of technical know-how as well as actual user experiences, for when the cycle starts in earnest.”
Welcoming the KPN announcement, a spokesman for NSN told TelecomFinance that the vendor already holds 20 commercial LTE contracts around the world, with “a lot more trials either underway or planned”.
KPN was unable to comment before the press deadline.
