Ivory Coast plans to award 3G licences by the end of the year and build a fibre optics network, Reuters reports quoting information technology and communications minister Bruno Kone.
The minister reportedly said that the state would invest nearly CFAFr9bn (US$19m) to roll out a 2,000 km fibre optics network, to be extended to rural areas.
There are reportedly between 15 and 16 million mobile subscribers in Ivory Coast and 300,000 fixed-line users.
France Telecom’s Orange, South Africa’s MTN, Etisalat’s Moov and Lebanon’s Comium are offering mobile services in the country.
