Responding to mounting speculation that Chinese equipment vendors have been banned from the Indian market, the country’s Department of Telecommunications has said that there is no formal ban on the import of telecom equipment from China.
Chandra Prakash, of the Telecom Commission, said that while there is no ban, all operators should get security clearance for equipment imports from the ministry of home affairs.
However, both Indian operators and Chinese vendors have claimed that proposals to purchase equipment from China were being rejected by the ministry on a regular basis.
India’s intelligence agencies are worried that China’s close ties with arch enemy Pakistan may compromise national security.
