Gtel, which is 40% owned by Russia’s Vimpelcom, has been operating mobile services in Vietnam since July 2009 under the Beeline brand and now becomes the eighth fixed line licensee in the country.
State owned Global Telecommunications Corporation is Gtel’s largest shareholder with a 51% stake.
According to The Mobile World, Vietnam had 13.5 million fixed line connections at the end of 2009 with fixed penetration of 15.45%. Mobile penetration had reached 133% by the end of 2009, according to the same source.
