Bharti Airtel’s (NSE:BHARTIARTL) Airtel-Vodafone and state-owned JT have submitted their merger proposal to the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA).
The proposal would see Airtel take a strategic minority interest in JT, with the States of Jersey retaining majority control, and the operators’ networks merged.
Previous attempts by the States of Jersey to privatise the operator have failed.
Arguing in favour of the merger, the companies have said it would maximise network coverage and speeds whilst reducing the proliferation of masts across the Islands.
CICRA will begin its independent assessment of the proposed merger with an initial two-week consultation period for any interested parties to comment on the proposed merger.
In addition to Airtel and JT, the Islands are also served by Batelco subsidiary Sure.
