Google has opened up its web-based communications product Google Voice to all US residents. The service, based on the acquisition of start-up GrandCentral, in July 2007, includes features such as a universal phone number unifying all fixed-line and mobile numbers, an SMS to email function and integrated voicemail.
Over the last year, the beta service was available to about one million people upon invitation.
In a Google Voice blog posting, Craig Walker, the founder of GrandCentral who now heads up Google Voice, wrote: “A little over a year ago, we released an early preview of Google Voice, our web-based platform for managing your communications,” the post said. “Today, after lots of testing and tweaking, we’re excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required”.
