Nigerian telecoms group Globacom has spread its network even wider after winning a licence to operate in Senegal.
The licence was signed off by Senegal’s finance and telecommunication ministers on Monday and enables Globacom to carry traffic for major operators, the government and wholesale customers. Globacom’s chairman Mike Adenuga Jr said the licence would enable the company to offer world class telecommunications services to the government and people of Senegal.
Globacom, a subsidiary of billionaire Adenuga’s MA Group, is Nigeria’s largest mobile operator by subscribers and has extended its coverage into other African countries such as Benin, Ghana and the Ivory Coast since its foundation in 2003. The Senegalese licence would allow Globacom to land its Nigeria-to-UK submarine cable, Glo 1, in the West African country with opportunities to extend the infrastructure to neighboring countries like Mali.
