France Telecom will launch its new mobile phone operation in Tunisia on May 5, according to Stéphane Richard, the company’s chief executive officer.
The French telco’s new subsidiary, Orange Tunisie, will break up Tunisia’s mobile phone duopoly of Tunisiana and Tunisie Telecom.
France Telecom won the licence in a joint bid with its local partner Divona Telecom in June last year.
Under the terms of the auction, any foreign bidders had to find a local partner to take a majority stake in the new operation.
France Telecom owns 49% of Orange Tunisie and Divona Telecom has the controlling 51% stake.
Tunisiana is a joint venture between Egypt’s Orascom Telecom and Qatar’s Qtel with both operators owning 50% stakes.
Tunisie Telecom is a state-owned company that sold a 35% stake in the business to the UAE’s TeCom in 2006.
