Four of the five operators which qualified to participate in Bangladesh’s upcoming 3G tender have placed deposits to participate in the auction scheduled for 8 September.
Citycell did not place a deposit and told the local regulator that it could not afford the US$20m fee as it was facing financial crisis, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
Airtel, Banglalink, Grameenphone and Robi all produced the fee, the chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Sunil Kanti Bose told local reporters.
Citycell had asked for the deadline for deposits to be extended but the BTRC declined the request.
The four participating bidders will be applying for four 15-year 3G licences.
The BRTC had hoped to open the Bangladeshi mobile market by reserving spectrum for a new entrant to bid for, but no foreign operator applied for frequencies by the 12 August deadline.
