Broadband infrastructure is a hot topic in the country as its network lags behind those of its European neighbours. The Italian government has pledged €7bn (US$7.6bn) towards a €12bn (US$13.1bn) national broadband project, with the rest to be funded by operators.
Meanwhile, Telecom Italia remains interested in a possible acquisition of dark fibre operator Metroweb, executive chairman Giuseppe Recchi has told journalists. The incumbent holds out hope that the Milan-based provider could become the centrepiece of its own national high-speed broadband roll-out.
