The Fiji government has announced it will launch the country’s first ever spectrum auction next month, between the 24 and 28 June.
The 4G licences “will play an important role in extending mobile coverage to 100% of Fiji, up from 95% now”, the minister for communications, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said in a statement
The 4G upgrade will complement the Universal Access Programme, which offers government subsidies to companies that provide services in remote areas, according to the statement.
Neither the number of licences to be auctioned nor the starting price has been disclosed. But Sayed-Khaiyum said that “the auction will promote competition, attract foreign investors, and eliminate the kind of corruption that is seen the world over when it comes to spectrum allocation.”
The auction will be open to all interested parties, including non-telecommunications companies, in order to increase competition beyond the two mobile operators in the country – Vodafone Fiji and Digicel.
