Social networking giant Facebook has strongly denied weekend reports that it is developing a mobile phone.
“Facebook is not building a phone,” a spokesperson said, adding that the company’s ‘approach has always been to make all phones and apps more social, not build a phone’.
Citing a source familiar with the project, specialist blog TechCrunch reported on Sunday that Facebook was busy developing a mobile operating system, while a third party was working on the phone’s hardware.
However, Facebook insists it is only working on existing platforms and operating systems, dismissing contrary reports as “not accurate”.
The spokesperson continued: “The bottom line is that whenever we work on a deep integration, people want to call it a “Facebook Phone” (even internally) because that’s such an attractive soundbite, but our real strategy is to make everything social and not build one phone or integration.”
