Global satellite and terrestrial connectivity provider EMC has bought Norwegian offshore communications specialist General Industry Systems (GIS) for an undisclosed sum.
The deal expands EMC’s energy and maritime connectivity services, giving it managed satellite connectivity solutions tailored for offshore and onshore operations, crew welfare networks and fleet broadband.
Founded in 1999, GIS provides global coverage in C and Ku-band.
Jesus Barber, VP of Maritime at EMC, said: “GIS brings years of experience in delivering specialised communications solutions to the energy and maritime industries, which are valuable in continuing to grow our customer base in these markets.
“Our combined customers represent many global energy and maritime companies that have relied on us to connect their offshore operations with the rest of the world, when it matters the most.”
EMC (Emerging Markets Communications) is backed by private equity firm ABRY Partners, which bought a majority stake in the group in 2012. It currently operates in 150 countries, with teleports and terrestrial pops in the US, Europe and Africa.
In September 2013, EMC acquired VSAT hardware manufacturer STM, as well as its satellite connectivity services subsidiaries Global IP and Vodanet Brasil, making it the largest VSAT provider in Africa.
