Indian government ministers dealing with spectrum allocation have agreed to allow established operators to keep limited amounts of spectrum after expiration of existing licences.
They also decided on fees for the transfer of licences from one operator to another in merger cases.
Media reports said EGoM, the Empowered Group of Ministers, decided today that operators will be able to retain up to 2.5MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz band after late 2014, when current licences begin to run out.
However, telcos will have to pay market prices that will be determined through auction, the Economic Times quoted unnamed sources as saying. The auction is expected to take place in early 2013.
If operators merger the buyer will also have to pay market prices for licences held by the target, EgOM decided today.
The cabinet still has to approve the EgOM proposal.
