Econet, a Burundi mobile phone operator, expects to more than double its number of customers to 300,000 by the end of this year, according to Eddie Chibi, the company’s head of commercial operations.
The firm, which is a subsidiary of South Africa’s Econet Wireless International, had 120,000 customers at the end of March, up from 100,000 at the end of December.
“Econet covers now 16 out of 17 provinces of the country; 25 new sites have recently been added to the 44 already existing,” Chibi said in an interview with Reuters.
U-com, which is owned by Egypt’s Orascom Telecom, has the largest share of the market. Econet also competes with state-owned Onamob and Africell, which is owned by Dubai’s VTL Holdings and Nepal’s Lacell.
Econet has increased the capacity of its network to handle 1 million mobile phone customers.
