Bharti Airtel’s acquisition of Zain’s African portfolio has been called into question by Congo’s telecoms minister Thierry Moungalla.
Congo’s government has claimed it was never approached about the deal and that it is illegal. Reuters quoted Moungalla saying that it was a ‘violation of the law of the country’.
The minister has also claimed that Bharti and Zain would have 30 days to rectify the situation or could face a fine or a withdrawal of the licence in the country.
Zain’s Congolese subsidiary is the market leader with reported revenues of US$154 for the first three quarters of 2009.
