US IT networking firm Cisco is bidding to acquire Luxembourg-based Skype, according to blog Techcrunch, citing what it called one of its more reliable sources.
This comes just weeks after the VoIP provider announced plans for a reported US$100m IPO. The blog also claims Google could be after Skype, although antitrust concerns would pose significant obstacles to any such bid.
eBay acquired Skype in 2005 for US$2.6bn, and in 2009 sold a 70% stake in the company – 56% to a consortium led by Silver Lake, and a combined 14% to Skype co-founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom. The deal valued Skype at US$2.75bn.
A spokesperson for Cisco declined to comment on the speculation, and Skype dismissed the report as a rumour.
