Industry Canada has awarded Ciel Satellite a licence to operate a 17GHz broadcasting satellite at the 113W orbital position.
The decision was pursuant to Industry Canada’s call for applications to licence 17 GHz BSS Spectrum at the 111.1W and 113W Orbital Positions. Telesat was previously awarded the licence to operate at 111.1W as part of a wider deal which saw it awarded six new orbital slots in total.
However, Industry Canada is now considering licensing another Canadian operator for the 111.1W licence on the basis that larger customer receiving antennas will be used for both positions. This is based on the fact that the regulator had not originally foreseen assigning the licences to different operators but having noted that Ciel proposed larger customer receiving antennas than anticipated and that Ciel did not object to the award of the 111.1W licence to Telesat, Industry Canada is now of the view that both positions may be used by different operators with only minor constraints.
In light of this, Industry Canada is now seeking Telesat’s views on the issuance of the 111.1W licence to Telesat based on its application in the context of the original call for applications under the changed circumstances.
