Chilean wireless operators Entel, Claro and Movistar have all acquired 4G spectrum in regulator Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones’ (Subtel) tender yesterday.
There were three blocks to be won and Chile’s three biggest operators, who were the only bidders, acquired one block each.
America Movil subsidiary Claro bought the first block for US$2.9m, incumbent Entel was awarded the second block for US$8.8m, while Telefonica’s local Movistar unit won the final block for just over US$500,000.
In total Subtel raised US$12.2m from the auction.
Once the licences have been issued the operators have 12 months to deploy their spectrum and a maximum of 24 months to connect 543 isolated areas, Subtel said
