Offshore telecommunications provider Broadpoint has been acquired by MTPCS, the parent company of US-based mobile operator Cellular One, for an undisclosed sum.
Broadpoint offers telecoms and data services via both satellite and cellular networks. The company has a VSAT network with more than 200 active remote sites operating offshore and onshore, while it has also built a GSM-standard 3G wireless network covering 100,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico.
On completion, the merged entity will connect Broadpoint’s satellite and Gulf of Mexico networks with Cellular One’s onshore networks in Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, and Wyoming. Prior to the deal, Broadpoint had built up a number of roaming agreement with terrestrial wireless operators to connect its network with the mainland.
Bryan Olivier, president and COO of Broadpoint said: “Uniting Broadpoint with Cellular One creates a bridge between the personal and professional lives of many of our customers, providing them with comprehensive coverage offshore, in their land-based office and at home.”
Cellular One is the brand name utilized by holding company MTPCS, LLC. MTPCS began operation in Montana in 2005 with the acquisition of the wireless assets of Blackfoot Communications, 3 Rivers Communications, and additional spectrum assets from Summit Wireless. In early 2008, MTPCS subsequently acquired additional wireless operations in Texas and Oklahoma and retained the Cellular One brand in Texas and Oklahoma, while rebranding its Chinook Wireless offering in Montana and Wyoming as Cellular One.
Broadpoint had not responded to SatelliteFinance’s questions by the time of going to press.
