South Africa’s third largest telco Cell C has partnered with Mirage Telecom and Comverse to launch the first mobile virtual enabler (MVNE) in the country.
The deal will see Cell C supply wholesale network services, while US-based Comverse will provide telecom software to local company Mirage Telecom, which will lead the project.
The MVNE platform will provide infrastructure solutions to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the country.
Cell C, jointly owned by Oger Telecom South Africa and black empowerment outfit CellSAf, has been working on increasing its network capacity in the country. In July it secured financial backing of US$572m which CEO Alan Knott-Craig said would “strengthen the company’s balance sheet.”
More recently it has been drawn into speculation that it could be a likely bidder for the mobile assets of Telkom SA.
