The Rural Cellular Association (RCA), which represents rural wireless providers, filed a notice to the FCC on Monday calling for it to adopt an automatic data roaming mandate.
In a statement, the RCA said that its members are experiencing difficulties in getting data roaming agreements with national carriers.
RCA president, Steven Berry said he was disappointed that the FCC had not yet acted on the issue of data roaming.
He said: “The entire wireless industry, with the exception of Verizon Wireless and AT&T, agrees with the National Broadband Plan that an automatic data roaming obligation is in the public interest.
“I simply cannot understand why the FCC does not take action immediately, when it has the authority to do so today.”
Berry urged the FCC to mandate data roaming in order to benefit consumers and to promote competition.
The FCC failed to reply to questions before the press deadline.
