The Indian government has appointed S. C. Misra as interim chairman and managing director for state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), according to Dow Jones.
Misra, who is currently member of the Telecom Commission within the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), will reportedly take on the additional responsibility for the next three months or until a new chairman is appointed, R. Chandrashekhar, secretary of the DoT, was quoted saying.
Gopal Das, who was appointed as chairman and MD for BSNL in July last year, retired on Monday, according to reports.
Late February, the DoT revived plans to merge BSNL with another state-owned telco, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL).
The merger plan was reportedly rejected three years ago by the former minister A. Raja, who is currently under investigation as part of the country’s alleged 2G scam.
A draft strategic plan for the merger states that a merger should be allowed because the two companies have complimentary operations and can combine their strengths for synergies, reports wrote.
