Britain will set up a dedicated space agency, according to the country’s Science Minister Lord Drayson. It will replace the British National Space Centre, which currently coordinates space investments made by other government bodies but has no program budget of its own.
This has long been seen as a disadvantage to British space interests in negotiations with other EU countries.
The space sector in Britain contributes £6.5bn per year to the economy.
Lord Drayson said: “Our space sector hasn’t missed a beat during this recession.
This is the classic story of outstanding UK science and entrepreneurship continuing to create jobs and achieve exceptional growth.
“The new space agency is about making sure that the UK fully exploits its competitive advantage in satellites, robotics and related technologies.”
