The Belgian telecoms regulator BIPT wants to lower mobile termination rates (MTRs) to reach 1.07 eurocent/minute on 1 January 2013.
The BIPT aims to gradually put an end to asymmetric MTRs between the three mobile operators. Currently, Belgacom/Proximus charges 7.2 eurocent/minute, Mobistar 9.02 eurocent/minute and KPN Group Belgium/Base 11.43 eurocent/minute.
In a release, the regulator said that the proposal should lead to a high reduction of retail prices to the benefit of the Belgian consumer and boost a healthy competition between fixed and mobile operators for converged products.
Operators have six weeks to submit their comments concerning the proposal.
