US online retailer Amazon is preparing to launch a subscription film streaming service, according to the LA Times.
Citing an unnamed source, the newspaper reported yesterday that Amazon had been in talks with Hollywood studios and independent companies about acquiring library content for the service.
If the report is correct, the new venture would be a challenge to existing film streaming services in the US, like Netflix.
On 20 January, Amazon announced that it had come to an agreement to acquire the European film subscription service LOVEFiLM in January 2010. LOVEFiLM combines DVD rental and online film services.
This transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011. The terms were not disclosed.
Amazon did not reply to questions before the press deadline.
