Algerian state television has refused to renew an annual advertising contract with Orascom Telecom’s local mobile network Djezzy, according to Reuters citing an unnamed source.
Djezzy is the focus of a lengthy row between Orascom and Algeria’s government, which earlier this year blocked the Algerian company from being sold to African telco giant MTN.
Other reported products of their turbulent relationship include a ban on Djezzy transferring profits back to parent Orascom’s headquarters in Egypt, and a tax reclaim worth US$600m.
Orascom recently confirmed the Algerian government was in talks to buy Djezzy, and the Reuters report suggests the move to block it advertising could be part of plans to force down its sale price.
A spokesman for Orascom declined to make any comments about the issue.
