Tom Alexander has been appointed chairman of UK MVNA Viacloud, marking his return to the mobile industry after stepping down as CEO of local operator EE in 2011.
Viacloud, which is backed by private equity firm Stratum, enables companies such as retailers to offer mobile services through its partnership with EE.
Alexander, who also founded MVNO Virgin Media, was last year reportedly talking to private equity firms to buy part or all of EE, a joint venture between Orange of France and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom.
However, Orange recently reaffirmed the owner’s plans to list a 30% stake in EE next year, adding it was in no rush.
Alexander is joining Viacloud shortly after the recruitment of a new executive team, which includes CEO Emanuele Angelidis, CCO Tim Stone, CTO Jon Kandiah and CFO Richard Schaefer.
Commenting on his appointment, he said: “I’ve been particularly interested in Viacloud as the company is now very well placed to help enable new MVNOs to address the mobile market.
“MVNOs have been extremely important in developing the consumer market over the past few years and this will continue through to the next phase, especially in the growth of mobile data and 4G. Consumer brands, content players and segmented routes to market are all key.”
