The oft-predicted consolidation of the Asian satellite sector is still on the cards, according to Asia Broadcast Satellite CEO and cofounder Tom Choi.
Speaking at the CASBAA Singapore Satellite Industry Forum, Choi remarked: “There is room for consolidation. All smaller satellite operators are in a situation where they are constantly competing with the larger operators. I believe there needs to be a second round of consolidation.”
Choi also confirmed that ABS itself was exploring potential opportunities. Late last year, the company snapped up the Philippines-based satellite operator Mabuhay Satellite Corporation, including its Agila 2 satellite and the Subic ground control centre, for an undisclosed fee. The acquisition was financed through the company’s internal funding and equity.
ABS has also sought to gain scale through the purchase of in-orbit satellites. Back in May, the satellite operator snapped up the Koreasat-3 spacecraft from KT Corp, just ten months after its purchase of Koreasat-2. It was also an unsuccessful bidder in the ProtoStar-1 auction.
