The US government body that advises the president on telecoms policy announced on Monday that it will be analysing the 1755-1850MHz band to see if it could be repurposed for commercial use.
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) said in a statement that the band had been selected for a detailed evaluation due to a range of factors, including industry interest and its commercial potential within the next ten years.
This evaluation follows a presidential memo issued in June last year that called for 500MHz of public and private spectrum to be made available over the next decade. This would almost double the amount of commercial spectrum available.
The analysis of the 1755-1850MHz band is expected to be completed by 30 September. If it is then repurposed for commercial use, the transition would be managed alongside the FCC and other federal agencies.
Currently the 1755-1850 band is being used by the Department of Defense, law enforcement agencies and other agencies that use it for satellite, surveillance, aeronautical, fixed microwave and other activities.
