A French company has reportedly won a bidding contest to manage the country’s telecom incumbent, ETC.
According to the local daily Capital Ethiopia, the unnamed company has beaten off bids from South Africa’s and India’s BSNL.
The Ethiopian ministry of communications and ETC did not reply at the time of publication. However, last November, the communications minister Peter Gatkuoth had denied rumours suggesting that ETC was looking for foreign partners to manage the company. Instead, he told TelecomFinance, the government had invited partners to participate in value-added services.
In contrast, Capital Ethiopia says the contract will see the winner manage ETC and oversee new schemes to reform its operations, from service provision to infrastructure maintenance.
The news comes as ETC is expanding its network with the help of ZTE, which is rolling out coverage to rural and remote areas.
