The Mexican government has announced the launch of a fibre-optic network auction, where bidders can lease capacity on the network belonging to the Mexican state owned utility firm, Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE).
The auction consist of a bidding tender for 20-year leases on three dark fibre routes, one along the Pacific coast, one along the Gulf coast and a third for the centre of the country. The lines are said to be especially desirable to the smaller players on the Mexican market, as well as for providing internet access.
The auction is being handled by the Mexican Communications and Transport Ministry, which has stated that combined minimum bids for the lines has been set at Ps858.6m (US$66.4m).
Wining bidders are expected to be announced by June 9, and be operational within 18 months.
