Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is inviting bids to build a special communications network for India’s defence forces in a project that could cost up to US$380m.
The bid will cover the procurement, roll out and maintenance of optical fibre cable.
BSNL will be undertaking the project at the behest of the Department of Telecommunications.
Currently, the Indian military holds the majority of the available radio bandwidth in the country. One of the project’s aims is to free up spectrum for civilian use.
This could open the door for telcos looking to take a slice of the bandwidth pie.
The new military network will be owned and operated by the defence services under the auspices of the Project Implementation Core Group, with BSNL building the network in tandem with the group.
