Leading operator Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) and Malaysian mobile operator Celcom Axiata have established an MVNO in Malaysia, which will operate as a joint venture.
According to Malaysian newspaper The Star Celcom will control 49% of PLDT Malaysia, while PLDT will own the remaining 51%.
Mobile prepaid services will be offered to overseas Philippine workers.
In a joint statement, the companies said: “The MVNO, which will be named PLDT Malaysia (PLDT MY), will mark Celcom’s fifth MVNO business. PLDT MY will be offering mobile prepaid services under the brand Smart Pinoy.”
Celcom CEO Mohammed Shazalli Ramly was quoted saying that its enlarged MVNO business is expected to contribute 10% to its revenue by 2015 against 5% at the moment.
