Chinese vendor Huawei has named John Suffolk, a former chief information officer for the UK government, as its global cyber security officer, effective as of 1 October.
In a statement released on 1 August 2011, the vendor explained that Suffolk “will be in charge of developing Huawei’s cyber security assurance strategy and system, managing and supervising its implementation.”
This appointment is seen as another attempt by the company to allay security fears. Huawei has on several occasions struggled to export its products to Europe, the US and certain Asian countries because of concerns regarding its perceived links to the Chinese military.
In the past, the vendor had already taken steps to ease potential fears. Back in December it set up a security evaluation centre in the UK and was considering implementing one in India.
Before, Huawei hired former George W. Bush administration member John Bellinger as an adviser, reportedly in an attempt to create links with Washington.
