China Mobile and Facebook held talks last month about a potential cooperation between the two companies in China, Bloomberg reported.
Reports from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland cite China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou as saying that he had met with Facebook’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in December, but that no agreement had been reached at the time.
Facebook’s services have been banned in China since 2009. But according to the China Internet Network Information Center, as cited by Bloomberg, China has the world’s largest number of Internet users – about 457 million.
In the meantime, incumbent China Mobile, which has one of the world’s largest mobile phone subscriber bases, is looking to focus on Internet and data services because of a slow subscriber growth in the phone market, Bloomberg wrote.
In separate news, Wang reportedly said that China Mobile was looking to invest in the US and Europe with a focus on TD-LTE technologies, according to Dow Jones citing Xinhua News Agency.
A few days ago, it was reported that China will have completed the testing of its 4G TD-LTE network within the next 18 months, with China Mobile leading the construction, operation and maintenance of the network.
