A group of five telcos, including Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom and China Unicom, have signed an MoU to build the first undersea cable between Taiwan and China, according to local reports.
Expected to cost NT$800m (US$27.5m), the construction of the 200km-long cable will link the Taiwanese coastal town of Tamshui to Fuzhou City in South-East China, the Taipei Times wrote. It will be led by Chunghwa Telecom. No starting time has been disclosed.
This combined project comes as relationships between the two countries have reportedly been warming up since the election of Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou in May 2008.
