Etisalat Nigeria has bought Alheri Mobile Services, a start-up company which holds a 3G licence, Telegeography reports quoting local newspaper The Punch.
Alheri, which was fully-owned by local conglomerate Dangote, received its licence in April 2007, alongside Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and MTN Nigeria. The companies paid US$100m each for their licence.
In 2008, the Nigerian telecoms regulatory authority started an investigation after Alheri failed to launch 3G services more than a year after winning the licence.
Etisalat Nigeria’s CEO, Steven Evans, was quoted saying that the GSM operator planned to invest US$400m in 2011, with US$50m to be dedicated to 3G equipment. Initial roll-out is expected in Lagos, Port Harecourt and Abuja.
The companies were not immediately available for comment.
