UK incumbent BT plans to continue its organic wi-fi strategy after doubling the number of hotspots to two million in the past six months.
A BT spokesman said the company is now the largest wi-fi provider in the UK and Ireland, and expects the growing smartphone market to increase demand for mobile internet.
London’s Charing Cross train station is the latest addition to its wireless broadband network, which covers widely-recognized brands including coffee chain Starbucks and Hilton hotels.
Gavin Patterson, CEO of consumer sales arm BT Retail, said: “Demand for wireless access is growing at a record rate, we’ve have added more than 780,000 hotspots in the last six months and will continue to meet the demand as more and more smart-phone, laptop, tablet, iPod and e-reader users choose WiFi to stay connected when they are out and about.”
