East Timor is planning to liberalise the telecoms market, according to media reports.
Deputy Prime Minister Jose Luis Guterres was quoted saying that Ireland’s Digicel and Indonesia’s Telecomcel have already expressed an interest.
Liberalisation law must be passed before any rival operator to Timor Telecom enters the market.
Timor Telecom CEO Manuel Amaro reportedly said that the operator had a monopoly on fixed and mobile services until 2017.
The East Timorese authorities were not immediately available.
