Three of Hong Kong’s four mobile operators have qualified to participate in the auction of spectrum in the 1.9-2.2 GHz band set to take place in December.
As expected, China Mobile, Hutchison Whampoa’s 3 unit, and SmarTone are all eligible to bid in the auction, in which 49.2 MHz of spectrum will be up for grabs, the Office of Communications Authority (OFCA) said in a statement.
PCCW’s HKT unit cannot take part as the terms of its recent acquisition of rival CSL prohibit it from doing so. Competition authorities cleared the deal on the condition that the companies do not renew 2.1 GHz licences set to expire in 2016.
The base price per MHz for the auction is HK$48m (US$6.2m), meaning it should raise upwards of HK$2.36bn (US$304.3m).
