Hungarian mobile and broadband operator Telenor Hungary has awarded Chinese vendor ZTE a E200m contract to build its local LTE network.
A spokeswoman for Telenor Hungary told TelecomFinance that ZTE was chosen following a six-month network tender.
It is understood that the E200m contract figure announced by the company is just a “catalogue price”, and that Telenor Hungary was able to negotiate “substantial savings” on the actual payment.
According to ZTE, the new network will boast more than 6,000 base stations in the next five years.
In a statement, Telenor Hungary CEO Anders Jensen said the deal with ZTE “shows that we are investing into our network and our business in Hungary long-term and that we are positive these investments will bear fruit in the future”.
Cited in the Financial Times, ZTE CEO Shi Lirong said his company’s contract with Telenor Hungary represents its latest breakthrough in the European market this year.
Other recent European contract wins for ZTE include its deployment of a WiMax network for Spain’s Telefonica, and the construction of mobile networks for Dutch operator KPN and other Telenor affiliates, the report adds.
ZTE and Telenor were unable to provide comment before press time.
