Zambia’s telecoms regulator has launched criminal proceedings against the nation’s three mobile operators for failing to meet minimum service standards.
Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) said in a statement it has resolved to take “remedial measures” against the companies – namely the local units of India’s Bharti Airtel, South Africa’s MTN and state-owned Zamtel – to protect the public interest in accordance with the Information and Communication Technologies Act.
“The deteriorating levels of quality of service has made communication difficult and resulted in increased public outcry and [had a] negative impact on ease of doing business in Zambia,” the authority said.
Furher details were not available.
Bharti Airtel and Zamtel did not immediately reply to requests for comment. MTN could not comment before press deadline.
