Russian satellite operator Gazprom Space Systems (GSS) has revealed that its Yamal-201 spacecraft has stopped working.
The company stated that on 5 June the satellite, which is located at 90E, had ceased broadcasting and it manufacturer RSC Energia was attempting to restore normal operations.
In the interim, GSS has transferred around 50% of Yamal-201’s customers to Yamal-300K, which is co-located at 90E.
It is now finding workarounds for the remaining transponders and has indentified Yamal-202 at 49E and Yamal-402 at 55E as the best options.
Yamal-201 was launched in November 2003 and was designed to be operational until 2015. The satellite contains nine C-band and six Ku-band transponders.
The spacecraft was due to be replaced with Yamal-401 in August 2013 but the Proton launch has been delayed until September of this year.
Yamal-201 was insured by local underwriter SOGAZ.
