Canadian mobile operator Wind Mobile is in a good position to lead consolidation of smaller operators in the country, the company’s CEO told TelecomFinance.
Anthony Lacavera said that there must be consolidation among the operators because “there is room for only one new national carrier in Canada”.
He added: “We believe we are well positioned to lead this consolidation, but of course this must happen with terms that facilitate the additional investment we need to complete our national rollout.”
The Canadian government recently relaxed its regulations for the foreign ownership of telcos.
In the wake of the decision, some market observers have speculated that smaller mobile operators, which also include Mobilicity and Public Mobile, could consolidate.
The Lacavera interview is part of a feature on the recent regulatory changes in Canada, and their implications for telecoms M&A, in the next edition of TelecomFinance magazine. The magazine will be published later this week.
