Telecoms investment group Weather Investments is “committed” to the Italian market, chairman Naguib Sawiris has told Reuters.
He told the newswire that Weather remained and would continue to remain “long-term investors” in the country, where it owns number three operator Wind.
This contrasts with widespread reports suggesting that Russian operator Vimpelcom, which has admitted it is in talks with Sawiris’ other telecoms holding, Orascom, has also voiced an interest in Wind. According to Vedomosti, Vimpelcom’s board has provisionally approved the acquisition of 51% of Orascom and all of Wind.
He said he was determined to take Wind from being a “good” company to a “great” one, adding that he wished to play a consolidating role in both fixed-line and mobile, with 4G also a “serious intention”.
Sawiris’ words followed a meeting with Wind management. He made similar statements about his commitment to the Greek market in May, shortly before announcing on July 1 that Greek asset Wind Hellas was on the block.
