Wales is to receive £56.9m of the UK government’s £530m investment fund to help roll out superfast broadband to 90% of the country by 2015.
“If the Welsh government matches our investment, 90% of the country’s homes and businesses will have access to superfast broadband,” said UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.
The UK government’s £530m broadband investment fund also aims to ensure every Briton has access to at least 2Mbps by 2015. Local regulator Ofcom defines ‘superfast broadband’ as capable of speeds in excess of 24Mbps.
Incumbent telco BT and cableco Virgin Media are already working towards deploying superfast broadband to two-thirds of the UK. The government fund will help the private sector reach the remaining third by making it viable to invest.
A government spokesman said funding allocations for the rest of the UK will be announced shortly.
