Vodafone and mobile operator Optimus are considering sharing LTE network infrastructure in Portugal, according to companies’ executives cited by media reports.
Optimus CEO Miguel Almeida was quoted saying, during the Congress of Communications in Portugal, that the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicacoes (ANACOM), the country’s regulator, could even force the sharing given the current recession climate.
However, Portugal Telecom CEO Zeinal Bava reportedly said that his company would not take part in the shared network proposal, saying its network was not available to be shared with anyone.
ANACOM is expected to launch a tender for LTE spectrum in the first quarter of next year. But, according to reports, the regulator has not defined yet the costs of the spectrum and how it will be split between operators.
