Hannes Ametsreiter is to become CEO of Vodafone Deutschland, effective 1 October, the company announced today.
The appointment is pending approval by the group’s supervisory board on 30 June 2015.
Ametsreiter, whose shock resignation as CEO of Telekom Austria was announced earlier this week, will also become a member of Vodafone Group’s executive committee.
He will step down as TA’s chairman and CEO on 30 July, having joined the company 19 years ago as a product manager before becoming CMO and then CEO in 2009.
Vodafone Group CEO Vittorio Colao described Ametsreiter as “an experienced industry leader with an extensive background in convergence, marketing and brand”.
Vodafone’s presence in Germany is under the spotlight, as the company considers a possible asset swap with pan-European cableco Liberty Global.
RBC Capital Markets analyst San Dhillon said two companies’ German assets would be the “most sought after, given the potential synergies around cable consolidation”, assigning Vodafone’s assets there an enterprise values of US$31.2bn, and Liberty’s an enterprise value of US$15.3bn.
