Telecoms giant Vodafone has named Sunil Sood as the new CEO of its Indian subsidiary from 1 April.
Sood, currently Vodafone India’s COO, succeeds Marten Pieters, who has led the unit since February 2009.
Pieters, who was appointed as chairman of the Cellular Operators Association of India last year, will remain on the Vodafone India board in a non-executive capacity.
As COO, Sood has been responsible for day-to-day operations, profit-and-loss management and developing new businesses such as the company’s mobile payments platform M-Pesa.
He joined Vodafone after the British company acquired the Hutchison Indian business in 2007. Sood has since led operations in Gujarat, Kolkata and Chennai. Previously, he held Indian and international management roles with Pepsi.
Vodafone group CEO for Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, Serpil Timuray, said: “Marten has successfully led Vodafone India through a period of rapid evolution, establishing the business at the forefront of Vodafone Group’s international portfolio while building strong organisational capabilities for the future”.
He noted that Sood has been “integral” to the unit’s growth and development, helping to deliver consistent results in both good and more challenging years.
Vodafone said Sood’s successor will be announced “in due course”.
Vodafone India claims to serve about 180 million customers.
